In biology, an organism behaves altruistically when its behavior benefits other organisms, at a cost to itself.

Altruism is an attitude, a choice, done with a smile and goodness in the soul. Simply done with no hidden agenda. Altruism is self-sacrifice for the benefit of another, going the extra mile to be kind to someone else without a thought to personal gain. Recently, it seems like our actions are all determined by selfishness. Altruism is not a job, a chore, or something that has to be done so we seem to not do it. Let this be a wake-up call to carry out an act of kindness no matter how big or small, the next chance you get. Inner peace and serenity is the reward.

One nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.

“Goodness and evil are not equal.

Repel evil with what is better.

Then that person with whom there was hatred,

may become your intimate friend.

And no one will be granted such goodness

except those who exercise patience and self-restraint,

none but people of the greatest good fortune.”

Qur’an 41:34-35
